In 2003 my wife and I sold our printing business and moved to Costa Rica… but shortly after, I became bored and started another business.

In all honesty, I had no expectations for success as I knew no Spanish, had no connections in the country, could barely send an email and knew absolutely nothing about my “new business” whatsoever. And I wore two hearing aids.

Yet … in 18 months… I was regarded as one of the leading real estate firms in the country and my earnings had already surpassed my earnings during my printing days for an entire decade.

Newsweek, Investors’ Business Daily, and dozens of newspaper and magazine articles and books about “retirement in Costa Rica” became commonplace.

It was almost like winning the lottery.

But we didn’t really regard it as unusual because … after all… we were living our dream and just putting on foot in front of the other and “acting as if…”

But it was not the money or the publicity that were unusual.

It was how people responded to us.

Approximately 25% of all of our buyers purchased land and property from us… completely sight unseen. All because of their trust in us. In a country that most would consider “second tier” and a banking system that was rated CCC.
And visitors would tell us that they actually considered us “a part of their family.”
And we had so many visitors that some of the locals in our town actually spread rumors that we were operating a cult.

But we didn’t really think twice about it… and it wasn’t until almost a decade later that we really wanted to know exactly what we had done that made us succeed like we did… because we really didn’t see it at the time!

And it was almost solely because our visitors, readers and buyers TRUSTED us.

And that is when my journey really started and my discoveries about what had happened … in retrospect, made perfect sense.

And it is all because of a world in which trust has almost disappeared.

Our country is lost… and we have no confidence in our government, our media, our politicians, our law enforcement…

The trust that held our nation together is damn near gone.

And we have come to accept it… that is the worst part. It has become a self- fulfilling prophecy.

And sadly, no one seems to know what to do about it.

Yet I did it… and I really didn’t know how it all happened.
